Dexter’s epic 2019 dog journey has officially begun! There were plenty of local dog-friendly day trips in January and February, but Cambridge, Ohio was our first pet-friendly weekend getaway. Traveling with dogs is always more fun with friends, so I invited Dexter’s best friend Levi and his mom Chris to join us.

Cambridge, Ohio is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Ohio in Guernsey County. With a population of around 13,000, this small town would be the perfect destination for dogs.

Pet Friendly Cities To Visit

Our first stop was lunch at McKenna’s Market in downtown Cambridge. This dog friendly restaurant offered outdoor seating and in the hot sun we stayed warm and dry even in March! This family market is owned by the McKenna family, who have been in the deli and market business since the 1970s. The family restored the century-old historic building, which soon became a foodie destination. McKenna Market is known for delicious homemade breakfasts and salads. We knew we were in for an exceptional experience.

The menu was extensive and offered a wide variety of dishes to suit all tastes. Chris ordered the shrimp basket and I got the chicken fiesta salad. Hot coffee for us and the dogs, fresh water and welcome dog treats.

As we drank our coffee, people came up to us, talking and petting the dogs. They were a huge success and everyone was so nice and sociable. McKenna’s front door had people coming and going during our lunch hour; They really have a thriving business. When our food arrived, I quickly learned why. The food was amazing!

When I travel, I really try to order food that isn’t my usual fare and I’m usually pretty satisfied. The fiesta salad was amazing! It was so fresh, colorful and full of flavor. My taste buds and stomach were very happy. Chris’s shrimp and fries looked hot and inviting. She said they were cooked perfectly.

A Guide To Pet Friendly Vacations In Every State

After lunch, I explored the interior of McKenna Market. It was full of great snacks, fruits, sweets, gourmet cheeses, meats, artisanal and local foods, freshly ground coffee beans, fine lemonade, wines and more. For dinner I ordered a few of their famous subs along with a bag of freshly ground coffee.

We thought it would be fun to drive around town looking for fun and quirky sculptures, murals and local landmarks. We were not disappointed. Cambridge was the home of former astronaut and US Senator John Glenn. Although we weren’t able to visit the John and Annie Glenn Museum with the dogs, we did find a historical reference to it in Ohio.

Another local celebrity was William Boyd. William Boyd rose to fame as cowboy star Hopalong Cassidy, appearing on the big screen in the 1930s and 1940s and on television in the 1950s. Cambridge has the Hopalong Cassidy Trail, a collection of memorabilia displayed in various locations throughout Cambridge’s historic centre. It was fun to find some of the displays.

Since our tummies wanted something sweet, we headed to Kennedy’s Bakery. Kennedy’s Bakery has been serving Cambridge since 1925. Family members have been baking for more than 80 years. This home bakery seemed like the perfect place to buy baked goods.

When I entered I was greeted by a warm smile and the sweet smell of fresh baked goods. There were so many great items to choose from! I was surrounded by fresh brownies, breads, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, doughnuts, cakes, candies and more.

One of the owners, Patty, gave me a behind the scenes tour. I was shocked at how huge the bakery actually was. They had old ovens and appliances that they had been using since the beginning of their business. I really enjoyed the family’s love and dedication to the bakery and its community. It was quite a pleasant experience.

Before I left, I ordered a rich chocolate muffin, a fresh donut, and some of their best-selling tea cookies. As my teeth sank into the decadent muffin, I realized that this muffin was made with love and fresh ingredients. The tea cakes were so sweet I almost didn’t want to eat them. But I’m glad I did; They were moist and had just the right amount of sweetness.

It was time to call it a day and head to our dog-friendly lodge at the Salt Fork Lodge and Conference Center (click here to learn more about the lodge). After feeding the dogs, Chris and I were ready to dive into our subs from McKenna’s Market. I ordered the Roscoe Country Chicken Salad and Chris ordered the McKenna Favorite. McKenna’s favorite was loaded with capicola, salami, pepperoni and an Italian 4-cheese blend. My salad was simply excellent. There were big chunks of chicken with a great sauce, not what you would think when you order a chicken salad sandwich. It was so unique and delicious.

After exploring Cambridge, Ohio all day, it was time to rest and rest for the adventure ahead. Saturday would be a full day of hiking and digging in Ohio’s largest state park, Salt Fork. But sleep first!
