Dog Friendly Overnight Trips Near Me

Dog Friendly Overnight Trips Near Me – For my birthday last week, I spent a few days at the (mostly) wonderfully dog-friendly Getaway House with Oatmeal. Getaway is a company that creates off-the-beaten-track tiny home communities within an hour’s drive of major cities across the country. We chose a location outside of Boston in southern New Hampshire, just 3 hours from where we live in Connecticut. It was easy to find and a nice drive.

My only purpose was to rest, wander, read books and take photos. And of course, do it all with Oves by my side. I love that Getaways is so dog friendly and even welcomed us with a little surprise – a treat set for me and an adorable bag of oats called Mutt Mallow. There were also two dog bowls and a takeout bag for us in the cabin. Other than the dog stuff, there was a small kitchen with basic equipment and pretty much everything you’d need to cook for two days. There was a two-burner stove, a sink full of fresh water, biodegradable soap, and a mini fridge. There were also books, playing cards, mini activity books, and a cell phone lock box if you decided to go completely off the grid.

One of the most popular features of Getaway cabins is the giant windows in each cabin. Next to the bed is a large, beautiful window overlooking the forest (or mountains in some places). Booking this little adventure was a last minute decision for me (partly because I like to do things spontaneously, but also because I was confident she wouldn’t have any work commitments that would require her to stay home for 3 days) and she still only had a Double cabin. It’s still a lovely little house, but I would have liked it without an extra bed above me and a huge window. But we have something to look forward to next time!

All beds are queen size with pillows and linens and are very comfortable. The big window doesn’t open but there is another small window at the end of the bed that lets fresh air in which was great at night because we were lucky to have nice weather. There are three more windows in addition to these two, so it’s quite airy and well-lit.

The first evening we took a short walk around the Getaway grounds, went to the nearby urban forest, then returned for dinner and rest. The next morning, I ate oatmeal, made breakfast, read a book, enjoyed the light streaming into the cabin, and then we went on a bigger hike to nearby Northwood Meadow National Park. It was a nice walk around the lake, so Oates was pleased to be able to swim at various off-trail spots.

The route we took was 3.8 miles, and we highly recommend Getaway Boston to anyone staying in Boston (or living nearby). There was a small leaflet in the hut recommending local walks, but I don’t believe it was listed. It was amazing, easy but beautiful, dog friendly and only 13 minutes from the lodge. Oats was excited about the swim and we both really enjoyed the trip. Also, does anyone know what kind of caterpillar is on the tree in the middle picture? We saw them everywhere, they were so fluffy and cute.

I asked Oates to stand on this rock to take a photo, and she didn’t want to take her eyes off the lake, so I caught her looking at the lake. I immediately liked this image because it reminded me of The Lion King. Everything that touches the Oatsy light…

Here are some cell phone photos of our trip (check out my Instagram page (@ see) or click HERE to see a “snapshot” of the trip with Oats’ captions. The trip is called “Escape Tour.” Some of the videos there are of others including a separate toilet in the cabin posts, details and photos of the cabins and our guide.

It was early in the morning after our hike, so I wanted to do something fun and dog-friendly before heading back to the cabin. There’s a dog-friendly brewery near the cottage but unfortunately it’s only open Friday-Sunday and we were there midweek. I kept seeing places in Portsmouth NH as I started looking for other dog friendly activities in the area. Portsmouth was only about 30 minutes from the state park we were at, so we headed there in the afternoon. We wandered around, visited some cute shops, took some photos, and Oats received lots of love (and kisses) from some lovely strangers. It was a beautiful late summer afternoon to walk a few miles through the lovely seaside town.

Then we got to return to this lovely little house and spend the evening relaxing. In front of the cabin was a picnic table, a chair, and a bin with firewood and kindling tools if you wanted to start a campfire. You buy what you need and then load it onto your card.

Every morning I tried to relax a little, drink tea, read a book, eat breakfast and fill myself with oatmeal. It was nice to not have a computer or television, just a beautiful view of the forest.

We did a few more local sightseeings before returning home the last morning. I didn’t take out my camera to take many photos, but I saw this cute piece of pine and thought it would look great surrounded by oat greens, so I spent a few minutes photographing it. They’re obviously having a good time. Maybe a Christmas card? 🙂

Note the difference between the cell phone view (below) and the camera view (above). While it’s not ideal to bring your camera with you when you go hiking (I don’t usually do that), sometimes it can be nice to take nice photos in the woods. I just took a few and put my camera aside to enjoy the journey.

Oates and I really enjoyed our trip to New Hampshire and our stay at Getaway’s tiny house. No noise or traffic. We were alone but there were many people around. There is electricity and water but no Wifi or TV. According to my sleep app, I slept better two nights of my trip than I did a week. We had been out for a few days and needed to breathe, but we felt right at home in our little cabin. I loved it and would recommend it to anyone traveling with a dog who wants to “get away” for a few days.
