Named for a Paiute word meaning “place of the willows,” Kanab, Utah is a base camp for exploring the pet-friendly wonders of southern Utah. Offering world-class hiking and hidden slot canyons, it’s an easy day trip to three national parks, five national monuments, two national forests and one national recreation area.
But more importantly for people traveling with pets, Kanab is the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. And having America’s largest animal sanctuary in your backyard makes Kanab a super pet-friendly city! There are some places in Kanab where pets are not allowed. So you and your furry travel companion will have plenty to do together!
Spring and fall are the most obvious times to visit the American Southwest with pets. However, with 256 days of sunshine per year, you’re bound to see several days of blue skies and sunshine whenever you visit Kanab, Utah.
If you want to avoid the crowds at the national parks, plan your trip in the winter when Kanab’s highs are in the 40s and 50s. In fact, the only way to experience Zion National Park’s most popular attraction, Zion Canyon, with your pets is to visit when the park’s trails are not in operation. And they only close at certain times between December and February.

Located just north of downtown Kanab, the Roadhouse is the most pet-friendly hotel we’ve ever seen. And being there helps the lifesaving mission of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, just five miles down the road.
In a world where some “pet-friendly” hotels don’t accept pets, we’d give Best Friends Roadhouse a 16 out of 10 on the pet-friendly scale. They offer a very special experience: the opportunity to stay in a hotel designed for pets!
Our room was beautiful, with a small kitchen to prepare and serve simple meals and a dining room for sharing. The bed was also extremely comfortable and the bathroom was lovely.
But many hotels have nice rooms and comfortable beds. Where Best Friends Roadhouse stands out is from its pet policy to the way it treats pets. There are no pet fees, no weight restrictions, no breed restrictions, cats are welcome and four pets are allowed per room.

But even that doesn’t make this hotel so special. It’s the thoughtful amenities that make your pet’s stay so enjoyable.
After a long day in the car, Miles and I discovered that the roadhouse has two dog parks! He had to run and burn off some energy. And Rod and I walked a long night.
The hotel provided Miles with a dog bowl in our room, but he preferred to drink from the dog fountain outside.
I was never less than happy to see the pet spa and guest laundry. Fortunately, we never had an incident that forced Miles to swim. But it will be very useful for anyone with a dog who wants a little pampering.

The next treat we discovered (besides the human cookies and dog treats we got at check-in) was that Miles had two dog beds to choose from. Do not include us!
And the trade, in addition to serving a fantastic breakfast, is full of all kinds of goodies. They also have pet supplies in case you forgot to pack.
And what about those who love animals but don’t travel with their own pets? The folks at Best Friends Roadhouse have you covered too! They will arrange for a dog, cat or rabbit of your choice from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to spend the night with you. This is a new level of pet friendly!!
Like I said, Kanab is very pet friendly and we had no problem finding food options with Myles. From casual take-out to vegan taco trucks to fine dining, hunger is never a concern.
Vacation Volunteering: Kanab’s Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Is Your Destination For Scenery And Snuggles
Staying at Best Friends Roadhouse alone is why I would go back to Kanab. But when you add in places to eat for pets and then think about what you can do together, it’s a travel destination of the highest order!
Located on 6,000 acres just five miles north of downtown Kanab, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is much more than its name suggests. Started in 1984, Best Friends has led a national movement to stop the killing of homeless dogs and cats, from caring for animals looking for homes.
On any given day, the sanctuary houses 1,600 dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, horses, pigs and other animals. And you’re invited to take a free guided tour, volunteer to spend time with the animals or enjoy the trails and surroundings with your pet.
The sanctuary is open seven days a week, but tours and volunteer opportunities fill up quickly, so be sure to sign up early! During our trip we took the Grand Sanctuary tour, following the tour in our car with Miles and listening to the tour guide on our radio. Then we did a pig and goat walking tour with Miles, taking it off the land.
Pet Friendly Zion Hotels & Lodging
Our next stop was at Angel Village Cafe for a wonderful vegan lunch. The view from your patio overlooking Angel Canyon will take your breath away!
Finally, we hit the slopes with Myles! A 1.3 mile hike on the Angels Overlook Trail took us to a Thanksgiving Garden and great views of the canyon below.
There are several routes to choose from, so pick up a route map at reception. And, if you’re not traveling with your pet, sign up to bring one of Best Friend’s resident dogs!
Just 22 miles west of Kanab, Coral Pink Dunes Sand Dunes State Park protects 1,200 acres of shifting sand dunes! Formed by the wind climbing through a range between the Moquith and Moccasin Mountains, it is a completely unique landscape seen in this part of the country.

Leashed pets are welcome throughout the park, although walking on the sand can be difficult for dogs and humans. Also note that many dunes are open to OHV use, so keep an eye out for vehicles while exploring. If hiking through the dunes isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other pet-friendly hiking opportunities around Kanab.
The park has two camping areas and a good picnic area if you are looking for a place to have lunch.
More than 250 million years of Earth’s geologic history can be seen in the colorful rocks of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Administered by the Bureau of Land Management, the monument covers approximately 1.9 million acres. And the grand staircase unit is just outside Kanab.
