After years of exploring New England with my dogs, I’ve compiled a list of my favorite dog-friendly vacation spots. With plenty of dog-friendly hotels, restaurants and more to choose from, these dog-friendly travel ideas are sure to keep your pet busy. Burlington, Vermont is one of the most dog-friendly places in New England. Burlington offers incredible outdoor adventures and a trendy, laid-back downtown that’s a playground for dogs and their companions. You will find lots of fun things to do with your pet. Bike the Burlington Greenway along Lake Champlain, then stop for a local beer at one of the city’s many dog-friendly breweries. Burlington has brewpubs where you can keep your pup on the patio, like Foam Brewers and Zero Gravity Craft Brewery, while Switchback Brewing Co. allows dogs indoors. Church Street Market is one of the most famous dog-friendly (and puppy-friendly) malls in New England, with many dog-friendly restaurants and shops. If you’re looking for pet-friendly accommodations, Made Inn Vermont is a quaint homestay just steps from downtown that offers a comfortable home-away-from-home for you and your dog.
When the dog days of summer arrive, there’s no better place to hang out with your pooch than Cape Cod! Miles of pristine coastline, an irresistibly relaxing charm, and a myriad of outdoor attractions make Cape Cod the perfect summer getaway for people and dogs alike. You’ll especially enjoy visiting Cape Cod National Seashore. Even in high season, dogs are allowed on a leash on this sunny sandy track and trails. Then head to Provincetown Brewery to quench your thirst. They’re so dog-friendly (and socially conscious) that there’s a doghouse in the beer garden that says “I bite racists.” There are also many places in Cape Town where pets are allowed. Pamper your pooch at the one-of-a-kind Chatham Bars Inn resort or try “playing” with your pooch at Nickerson State Park’s campground.

If you want to relax by the ocean with your dog, head to Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Just 8 miles south of Portland, it’s a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle without straying too far from the road. South of Williamsburg State Park is the famous Portland Headlights, a large off-leash grassy area where dogs can run and play. Of course, you can’t come to Maine without trying the local lobster roll, and Bite of Maine Park has outdoor food trucks with pet-friendly picnic tables. Higgins Beach is a popular place for puppies to play in the sand and water. After a long day in the sun, relax at Inn by the Sea, a luxury beachfront resort offering the highest quality vacation experience for pets and their owners.

You and your dog will love exploring Nantucket together. This small island off the coast of Cape Cod has few traffic lights, but is full of New England charm. Once you board the ferry, you’ll see plenty of other pet owners along the way, and it’s clear that Nantucket is a place that welcomes canine guests. Choose from a variety of dog-friendly activities, from the Sconset Bluff Walk to visiting the historic lighthouse. The city has plenty of dog-friendly patios, including breakfast spot Black-Eyed Susan’s and eclectic American bistro Queequeg’s. Sit back and relax at the peaceful Brass Lantern Inn, where four-legged friends are welcome in select rooms for a nominal fee.
This dog-friendly town in northeastern Vermont is a must-see. Known as the Ski Capital of the East, Stowe attracts visitors from near and far to its world-class resorts each winter. But with many outdoor activities year-round, Stowe is the perfect place to vacation with your dog.
If you’re looking for a great adventure, Smuggler’s Notch State Park offers miles of trails through stunning green mountains. If you’re looking for something more low-key (but no less fun), you and your dog will love a walk on the Stowe Recreational Trail. This 18-kilometer paved trail is lined with dog-friendly restaurants and breweries. There are also plenty of dog-friendly places in the area to suit all budgets. Luxury resorts like Trapp Family Lodge, Topnotch Resort, and Lodge at Spruce Peak offer the ultimate in comfort. However, if you’re looking for cheaper accommodation, consider staying with your dog at Field Guide Lodge or The Stowehof.

Long Island, New York is known for its beautiful beaches and excellent schools. One thing that is not well known is that it is very dog friendly. That’s not to say the Long Island area doesn’t have some great places to hang out with your dog. But Montauk, New York, located on the eastern tip of Long Island, is a great vacation for dogs. This is one of the few places on Long Island where you can spend quality time with your dog.

Montauk is on the east end of Long Island, and I mean the end of Long Island. You’ll see t-shirts, bumper stickers, and other items with the “MONTAUK” label. The End,” as Montauk Point marks the end of Long Island. When you leave Montauk Point, you find yourself in the Atlantic Ocean, a mile from land.
One of Montauk Point’s main attractions is the 200-year-old lighthouse. Visitors can pay to climb to the top of the lighthouse and enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean and all of Montauk. As you head east toward Montauk, you’ll pass through the hip Hamptons area. Summer fun on Long Island is the beach! Sunbathing, surfing, water skiing, boating or hiking the dunes and cliffs are favorite activities of Long Islanders. I grew up on Long Island and can attest that Long Islanders love their beaches and waterways! Unfortunately, there are very few dog-friendly beaches in the “island” area. However, Montauk has at least two great beaches that are open to dogs at any time of the day, year round! Unlike Montauk’s neighboring Hamptons beaches, which have strict rules restricting dogs from entering the beach.
Camp Heroes was a military base until it was turned over to the New York City Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation in the 1980s. It was even used as a weapons training ground during the Revolutionary War! No, we didn’t find any cannonballs – other than the ones in the pool nearby – haha! Located on the beautiful Montauk Coast, Camp Hero is dog friendly! We had a great time cruising along the sea enjoying beautiful views of the coast and cliffs.

In the photo below, you can see the historic Montauk Lighthouse in the distance. We had to walk down a steep and narrow path to get from the cliff to the beach, but it was worth it!

Montauk Point State Park is located in eastern Montauk near Camp Heroes State Park. The biggest tourist attraction is the Montauk Point Lighthouse. Once you’ve paid $8 to park at Montauk Point State Park, Camp Hero is free, so keep your receipt!
