If you live on the coast or are just in town for a visit, navigating the confusing rules and regulations regarding dogs on the beach can be difficult, but that’s it! The alphabetical list below summarizes all published rules regarding dogs on the beach and provides links to sources of information and/or appropriate contact information where available. If rules are not posted, Audubon South Carolina will provide guidance accordingly.
Dog Friendly Vacations South Carolina
It’s useful not only to know the rules, but also to understand why they exist. This is often due to the tourist season and increased number of beach visitors. But in the best cases, regulations are in place to protect dwindling populations of shorebirds and seabirds that depend on beaches for survival.
Kiawah Island Beach
Sandpipers and seabirds view dogs as predators, so no matter how friendly the birds may be, the sight of their four-legged friend can cause birds to abandon their nests, putting eggs and hatchlings at risk of death from heat or predation. It only takes a few minutes in the hot summer sun for mom and dad to leave the nest for the eggs and chicks to die. Dogs also increase bird mortality during spring and fall migration. Birds view humans and dogs as predators, so they expend precious energy flying toward approaching monkeys. This means you spend less time eating and resting while traveling a mile.
Regardless of the posted rules, if you see a flock of birds on the beach or a sign marking a nest nearby, keep your distance, keep your dog on a leash at all times, and try not to disturb the birds. Their lives and their entire nation depend on it!
