At 956 feet above the roaring Arkansas River, the tallest suspension bridge in the United States is located at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. This bridge was never part of a road or street, but was built for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the wonderful natural scenery. Walk through the wooden planks through the Royal Gorge with your four-legged friend! Everyone will enjoy the cool Colorado breeze and the beautiful view from the deck. Bridge access is included in your general admission.

Explore the connected trails of the Royal Gorge Park trail system! Our local community works hard to keep these trails in the best possible condition for your enjoyment. You will experience the beautiful scenery of the Royal Gorges and the suspension bridge that stretches from one end to the other! The trail opened in 2018 and offers hikers and bikers over 17 miles of trails to explore. Explore the natural landscape and spectacular views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Arkansas River and the incredible Royal Gorge. While the high mountains are filled with snow during the coming winter, you will enjoy the mild weather of the Royal Gorge for hiking and biking all year round!
Of all the trail options in southern Colorado, the best option is the Canyon Rim Trail, which is the first trail built around Royal Gorge. Park at the Canyon Rim Trailhead, located on County Road 3A near the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park entrance. This hiking trail offers spectacular views of the Royal Gorge, including the unique viewpoint of the Royal Gorge Bridge. Make sure you keep your eyes out for the Arkansas River winding through the walls of the gorge! Dogs must be leashed on these trails because wild animals such as big sheep and snakes are common in our area.

Stop by the patio of Café 1230 near the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park entrance and grab a cold drink for you and your kids. We serve locally brewed craft beer, including Bristol Brewing Company’s head lab, to all dog lovers 21 and over. Our staff strives to provide fresh, clean water bowls for our four-legged guests. Café 1230 is one of the many restaurants at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. You can sit and relax on our outdoor patio to enjoy the spectacular view of the Royal Gorge while your kids relax after a day at the park. Fuel up your adventure with burgers or salads, coffee and more on this restaurant’s menu. Colorado has 4 national parks, and three of them have lots of dog-friendly areas! Unfortunately, the state’s most popular national park (Rocky Mountain National Park) does not allow dogs on any trails. But three lesser-known parks: Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison are definitely worth a trip with your pup. These three parks are in southern Colorado and can be combined into one amazing road trip (the Ultimate Dog-Friendly Colorado Road Trip is in the works). If you plan to visit multiple parks in the same year, consider getting a National Park Annual Pass! An annual pass costs $80, but individual park admission costs $25 or $30 per person.
The Great Sand Dunes are about a four-hour drive south of Denver. Although there is a lot of driving, it is possible to make the trip today. That’s what Alice and I did! Dogs are allowed in the first set of sand dunes and along some trails. I was amazed as we headed towards these huge dunes, with huge 14ers on the side in front of them Weather can definitely make or break your trip to this park. We were there the first week of April, on a sunny day, not too windy and not too hot, and it was absolutely perfect! It is very cold, with snow, in winter, but very hot in summer. Some park roads are closed in the winter (and most in the fall), so you won’t be able to access the high-altitude trails. If it’s too windy, sand can get into your puppy’s eyes. If it is too hot, the sand can burn their feet. We saw other dogs wearing booties and goggles to combat this! The weather in Colorado is pretty unpredictable, but my goal is to go in April, May, or October, or get there at sunrise before the heat sets in. Be sure to stop to hike Zapata Falls along the way; You will see a sign between the road and the entrance to the park. Bring waterproof shoes or at least a change of socks.
Located in the southwest corner of Colorado, Mesa Verde is full of cliff houses built and inhabited by Pueblo ancestors in the 12th century. Although dogs are not allowed on the tours that take you to the cliffs, they can accompany you on the Park Point Trail, the Nordeskold Site #16 Trail, and on the paved trails and trails around the Mesa Top Loop with numerous viewpoints above the valley. . Conflicting opinions… I prefer the Black Canyon of the Gunnison to the Grand Canyon! The park was not very busy when I was there in July and the view of the canyon walls was incredible. The marble patterns on the rocks are incredible and the rock formations created by the valley are impressive. Dogs are allowed almost anywhere above the rim, although it’s not clear on the map. The Rim Trail is definitely dog friendly. Other viewpoints with smaller trails, such as the Painted Wall, Sunset Point, and Chasm View, have small signs indicating that leashed dogs are allowed. Watching the sunset from Sunset Point is definitely beautiful! The weather can be a problem here: the main road is closed in winter, but it is very hot during the day
