Your pet’s vaccinations fall into two categories: core and regional non-vaccines. Vaccinations that are not regionally required are those recommended by veterinarians in the area to ensure your pet is vaccinated against diseases common in the Central Valley.
Regional non-essential dog/puppy vaccines: Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Canine Influenza and Rattlesnake. (These vaccines may or may not be recommended depending on the dog’s exposure risks.)
Regional non-core vaccines for cats/felines: Feline leukemia. (This vaccine may or may not be recommended depending on the cat’s exposure risks.)

The number of parvo-positive dogs entering local vets, vets and shelters has steadily increased in recent years, and the best way to stop the increase is to vaccinate them against the virus. Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus and, if left untreated, the mortality rate is very high. Parvo can withstand heat, cold, humidity, and dry conditions and can survive in the environment (home, yard, bedding, collar, ant, bowl, and kennel) for very long periods of time. Parvovirus attacks the gut and symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, fever or low body temperature, severe vomiting and diarrhea, causing rapid dehydration and eventually damaging the gut and immune system, leading to septic shock. Young and old dogs are more susceptible, but adult dogs can also contract the virus. Treating a dog for parvo is expensive and not always successful, so prevention is important.
Rabies is a very dangerous virus that is transmitted by the saliva of sick animals. Anyone can get infected if bitten by an animal carrying the virus. The Centers for Disease Control reports that about 25 percent of the annual turnover of the dog population requires repeated vaccinations. Rabies kills more than 55,000 people worldwide. LC4 operates this clinic to protect the safety and health of not only the dogs, but also the people who come into contact with them. Rabies is legal in most counties and cities in Ohio and surrounding states. County Offering Low Cost Pet Vaccinations To Area Residents
Action Programs for Animals (APA) is hosting a low-cost microchipping and vaccination clinic on Saturday, July 22, from 8 to 10 a.m. at the APA Adoption Center, 537 N. Solano Drive in Las Cruces.
These services are offered for $15 each: Rabies vaccine: one annual dose, three annual doses if needed; microchip; Bordetella vaccine.
Thanks to Petco Love’s National Vaccination Initiative, these services are provided free of charge: DAPP vaccine (diphtheria, adenovirus, parainfluenza and parvo vaccine); and FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukopenia) vaccine.
“Thanks to Petco Love, APA continues to provide free vaccinations to pet owners in our community,” said APA Executive Director Michelle Monyer. “Additionally, our low-cost two-month clinics are the only clinics in the region that offer three-year rabies vaccinations for eligible animals, which sets our clinic apart from others.”

APA can only service dogs and cats in a carrier, the statement said. According to APA, the person who brings the pet to the clinic must stand in line outside the clinic by vehicle. Everyone is called into the building when it is their turn. APA accepts cash or credit cards.
Anyone needing a car clinic should call the Mesquite Animal Vaccination Clinic at 575-650-2000 or the Mesquite Valley Animal Services Center at 575-382-0018.
Since May 2012, APA has rescued more than 5,800 animals. Most of them are dogs and cats/puppies taken from the municipal shelter. APA can do this through rescue/putting coordinators, volunteer work of foster families, and donations.
