Best Dog Friendly Hikes Utah – You love your new studio apartment downtown, but Mr. Pickles would trade all the bare whiteboards in the world. If wandering around town isn’t enough, here are some great destinations for you and your crazy pup.
If you have a social dog who just wants more leaves in his life, head to Sir Tanner Park. The popular park’s easy, dirt trails are accessible any time of year, and there’s a great natural stream. You can take Fido off the leash as soon as you pass the sign marking the entrance to the Farley Nature Area. Take advantage of the dog wash and dog grooming stations before you head out. Again, this is a popular park and gets packed on weekends, so if your partner is a lone ranger, maybe give it another try.

Round Valley is a local favorite and less crowded than Tanner Park. If she just likes open spaces, this is the place to bring her. With 40 miles of off-leash and easy, moderate and steep trails, you can find everything you need in one place.
Best Hikes In Salt Lake City, Utah — Colorado Hikes And Hops
Leave the hunters! (Every other day.) Mill Creek Mall in Salt Lake allows dogs on odd days (Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays of the month, etc.). But even on countable days they are caught and dragged into developed areas like picnic grounds and parking lots. The mall has a large trail system, with mostly moderate and difficult trails. Local dogs love the Dog Lake Trail because there is a very nice fruit at the end of the trail. Only the chicken, it goes to the pond.
Another local favorite is Neff Canyon, a 5.5-mile hike that can be moderate to difficult, depending on how far you and the common fur want to go. And don’t forget your camera – Neff Mall gives you some great views. Due to the exposed trails, sunscreen and water are recommended for day trips.
Are you the proud owner of a Beagle Energizer? If you really want a trip to Poppers Q Douglaston, try hiking Mount Olympus. It’s a tough, rocky climb and the 360˚ view at the top can leave you emotional. The trail near the top is scraggly, so if your dog can’t navigate the large rocks, it’s best to get back in the saddle.
If the in-laws want to spend the day shopping at City Creek and you just want to play in the mud with Frank the Tank, check out this scenic trail two blocks downtown. The trail runs parallel to Canyon Road and is named after the original City Creek Canyon; A mainstay is the dog-friendly Memory Grove Park.
Best Dog Friendly Hikes In Salt Lake City
Take Immigration Canyon Road 6 miles east, turn left onto Pinecrest Canyon Road for 0.4 miles, bear right another half mile to a signposted parking area.
If you want a nice, quiet walk with your dog, check out the Killian Mall at the top of one of Salt Lake’s most open malls: the Immigration Mall. It is a large stream that meanders about 4 kilometers long. Enjoy rolling hills and pine trees. For bonus points, go in the fall and see the amazing colors.
If you live near a mountain peak, check out Dimple Dale Nature Lover’s Park. (Nature enthusiast IDs will be checked upon entry.) It’s a charming, well-lit park with a natural canyon with several hiking trails and a cool spring and early summer flowing stream.
You can hike Park City’s trail system for years and still have new trails. With more than 400 miles of continuous recreational and motorized trails not permitted, Park City is a dog lover’s mecca. Check out Willow Creek Trail and Lost Seekers Trail to get started.
Hunters Canyon, Moab Ut
Both of these amazing sounding lakes are easily accessible and can be great places to go if Paula Deen needs to cool off in the water. Most of the Grand Cottonwood Canyon is a watershed that does not allow dogs to swim or wade, with Lakes Lakexon and Blood being the exceptions. The trailhead is east of the guard crossing.
If you and Mt Schlobernozel can’t get enough water this summer, check out Horsetail Falls. It’s a wooded and shaded (but steep) 4-mile waterfall that rewards you for all your hard work. Also, dogs are allowed without a leash. Everyone wins.
Silver Glens Lake is not for the faint of heart or the faint of heart. The trail crosses two streams, offers great views of Mount Timpanogos, and leads to a high alpine lake. It is about a 5 mile hike with about 1200 feet of elevation gain. Also, the road leading there is steep, so we recommend leaving your compact car in the garage. We’re getting closer to warmer weather, and you know what that means… road trips! If you’re like us, you love taking your dog for walks. Last September, we took the most amazing road trip to amazing Utah with our two boys, Newton + Maya. I thought I’d do a little blog series (part one of two) about our adventure and hopefully give you some helpful tips if you happen to be hiking there with your dogs.
Of course, there are 2 main factors in Utah: (1) weather + (2) crowds. As a major tourist destination, it gets busy during the warmer months, so keep that in mind. Also, Utah gets HAWT in the summer. For you and your puppy, this may not be ideal. We chose to go in mid-September and it worked for us. The crowds were still there, but not as bad as in June, July or August. Although it was still warm and hot at times, it wasn’t the dead heat of summer. Can we do October? Maybe, but we want it very cold, so maybe traveling in late September, early October is a good compromise.
Utah Dog Adventures
So are you ready to go for a walk with your dog?! Maybe you’ve done it before (good for you!) but maybe it’s your first long road trip and you’re a little nervous. Here is some information to help you prepare. First, make a list of the things your dog needs each day.
And anything else they can use every day or will help make them more comfortable outdoors.
Then, divide the food and treats for your cat each day, multiply by the number of days you’ll be away, and put it all in a container or plastic bag for easy transport. Count the number of pills/nutritional supplements you need per day and multiply them by the number of days and keep them in a bag/container for easy transportation. Then, just fill up the water bowl, toys, dog bed or vacuum and whatever else your dog needs and pack the car!
Now let’s get to the good stuff… Where to go in Utah? Well, for us, it was really difficult to choose just one area. If you’ve ever explored Utah, you know that it has amazing parks and destinations throughout the state. You’ll want to see the arches and canyons in eastern Moab, but you’ll also want to do Zion National Park and check out all the amazing slot canyons in the Utah desert in the southwest/southcentral region. Utah has a lot to offer, and if you’re traveling from both sides of the state, you’re already on a long journey, so you might as well go with your honeymoon and take it all in at once. [PS: We also didn’t get to fit in the epic Monument Valley in Arizona, which isn’t too far away and would be an extra day or two, but oh well…next time!]
Exploring Southern Utah From Pet Friendly Kanab
We decided on a week long trip (5 nights and 6 days to be exact) to see as much as possible. Planning such an elaborate trip can be overwhelming, but with a little (actually, a lot) of research, planning, enthusiasm, and inspiration, you can do it! And I hope this blog helps you in your planning. So here’s how we break it down.
Since it was home, Denver, CO was our starting point. We decided we wanted to include Moab and Zion in our trip, even though they were 4+ hours away and on opposite sides of the country. It made sense to do Zion first, since it’s the farthest (9.5+ hours from DEN) and there are some amazing slot canyons on the way from Zion to Moab that we wanted to see as well, so that was the plan. We started our week trip in Hurricane, UT, just 35 minutes from Zion. After that we spent 2 nights there and then left for Moab. Stopped where possible in the Kanab, Utah desert on the way to Moab
