The Kentucky Red River Gorge is only a few hours away from Lexington, Cincinnati, Columbus, Nashville, Knoxville and more. It is also the second or third largest hiking destination in the entire United States. (It’s probably second only to California’s Yosemite National Park and possibly even California’s Joshua Tree.)
The Swift Camp Creek Trail has many starting and ending points in the Daniel Boone National Forest. If you want to combine the two into a day trip, Rock Bridge has a trail along Swift Camp Creek.
Both tours are dog friendly. They can be on the street and the municipality supports them.

There is a Skybridge station nearby for food, although I haven’t eaten there yet. Important because I visited the Red River Gorge when it was not active. So they have a certain amount of time.

The crowd and liveliness are somewhat quieter and older than Miguel. We stayed with experienced hikers and teams from Quebec City who had been climbing the Red River Valley for months.
The camp has many sites and miles of real hiking trails inside. In the morning we visit a lot of roads, have lunch and in the afternoon we return to the hiking area. They have a restaurant on site, but it is only open on weekends during Ramadan.
Miguel has cheap tents scattered throughout the area and I want to stay there again. Although the dog is old, I rely on Lago Linda. (While we spend the afternoon at Miguel’s!)
Good connectivity seems to make this area of Kentucky a great place to get away from anything but hiking. Yes, the climbing is amazing, I climb every time we go.

But the trails are uncrowded, the location is good for dogs, it’s accessible to most major cities, and there are many places of interest. Besides, wherever we try to go (restaurants, campsites, etc.) there are good options for us.
Kentucky’s Red River Valley has been my home for most of my life and I spend a lot of time visiting it. But once I got there, I came back and made it my favorite travel destination outside of the Midwest/High South of the United States.
