Lately I’ve been walking around LA a lot with my boyfriend and my Mini Goldendoodle. From Rancho Palos Verdes to Santa Monica, we’ve covered a lot. My favorites are on this list. They loved dogs as much as we did, and we can highly recommend them all.

First on my list of the best hikes for dogs in Los Angeles is Portuguese Bend Nature Reserve in Rancho Palos Verdes. Four-legged friends are allowed here and it’s a popular spot for hiking and views of the Pacific Ocean.

Portuguese Bend Preserve is 399 acres on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, southeast of Del Serro Park. Established in 2005, the 1,400-acre Palos Verdes Nature Preserve is the largest single preserve. It is famous for its hills, dramatic canyons and cliffs.

The wide trails in Portugal’s Bend Preserve are open to anglers, bikers, horseback riders, and dog walkers. A great place to get out and soak up the beauty of Southern California.

There are many trails to choose from and they vary in length and difficulty. Note that due to the slope of the reserve, you will have to turn back at the end of your walk.

My love, the dog and I love the cycle that starts at Burma Road. The main road from the entrance is Crenshaw Blvd. From here there are great views of the coast and Catalina Island.

The journey takes us only 2 hours. It’s a great way to get out and see the best of the area at the same time. Although very difficult, the hills are not too steep for our liking. Overall, we really enjoy it.

Best Dog Parks In Los Angeles

San Vicente Mountain Park is on our list of the best dog hikes in Los Angeles. It’s all on the way to the famous Mulholland Drive ex-Nike launch pad. Located in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, it’s a fun place to get outside.

San Vicente Mountain Park is located in the East Santa Monica Mountains, west of Highway 405 and above Encino Reservoir. Spread over 10.2 hectares, this place is steeped in history and is a pleasant walk from here.

This rock-and-roll walk begins on Mulholland Drive and runs approximately 2 miles. A wide dirt road with a slight incline from the paved part of the road to the old military reservation. It’s a very easy trail, flat terrain, great views and some climbing.

It takes about an hour to complete the journey. If you and your dog are in good shape, you can do it faster. If you’re willing to spend some time exploring the rocket site (it’s worth it), you might as well give it a shot.

The Best La Hiking Trails That Aren’t Crowded With People

There are several other dog-friendly trails that lead away from the rocket site, so if you want to go on a longer hike, you might want to own one. From the Canyonback Trail to the West Mandeville Fire Road Trail and Mulholland Drive, there are plenty of options.

My list of dog-friendly hikes in Los Angeles includes those going to Mount Hollywood. It’s perfect if you and your average companion want to go out to Griffin Park.

Located in the East Santa Monica Mountains, Griffith Park includes 4,210 acres of natural and landscaped land. It is one of the largest urban parks in the United States and is a popular hiking destination in LA.

Not only that, but the wide network of trails offers great views from Downtown LA to Century City, Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Sign, and other Los Angeles landmarks.

My boyfriend, his dog, and I went up to Mount Hollywood and came back here. After parking at the Merry Go Round parking lot, we took the Fern Canyon Trail to the Upper Beacon Trail, then took a right and continued exploring on Vista Del Valle Drive. From there we followed the Hogback Trail to Dante’s View.

It took about 2.5 hours in total. We left at 9:30 a.m. on a hot morning and wish we had left earlier. That was our only regret, as the trail was beautiful and the views are worth the climb.

Our list of dog-friendly hikes in Los Angeles includes the West Mandeville Fire Trail in Mandeville Canyon. A moderate difficulty hike near Brentwood and Santa Monica, great if you love scenic open roads.

There are great opportunities to enjoy the canyon views with your dog along the 3.64 mile trail on the eastern edge of Topanga State Park. It connects to Mulholland Drive and San Vicente Mountain Park below.

Like everyone else on my list, there is plenty of sunshine on this trip. If it’s going to be hot outside, it’s a good idea to arrive earlier or later.

My boyfriend, his dog and I headed back down Mandeville Canyon. After a stop on Westridge Road, we took the fire road over the hill. There were lots of paths and steps to go back and forth and we had a lot of fun exploring the area and making our own way.

Since it’s out and back, it can go on as long as you want. The road has an elevation gain of 696 feet, so take that into account when determining how far you want to go and how long it will take you.

On my list of dog friendly hikes in Los Angeles is the beach on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The Bluff Cove Trail at Malaga Cove is just a short drive down the road. It takes you and your dog through the surf between Flat Rock Beach and the beach at Surf View Park.

It’s 1.1 miles to the Pacific Ocean on South Bay and back road. On the way, you will enjoy beautiful coastal views and an abundance of wildflowers before reaching the rocky coast.
