Best Vacations With Dogs West Coast – In this post, I wanted to take a look at the most dog-friendly places in the West ~ focusing on California and Oregon, two states where you can easily travel with pets (I know, because I visit there often)! Among these sites, I wanted to find the best dog-friendly places: i.e. spacious dog parks or dog-friendly beaches, good pet-friendly hotels and cool city air that makes it easy to bring. Your pet. Animals while traveling. I found some great places like Bend, Oregon, Carmel, California… and many more. Join me and my dog Dylan as we explore the “Best Dog Friendly Places on the West Coast!”
Although my dog-only beach in Oregon is Cannon Beach, remember: almost every beach in Oregon is dog-friendly, with far fewer rules and restrictions than beaches in California! Translation: The Oregon Coast is the perfect destination for dog-friendly excursions. Photo of Gold Beach, Oregon.
Best Vacations With Dogs West Coast
I love Cannon Beach for many reasons: a charming downtown, tons of great restaurants, COFFEE (Sleeping Monk!!), tons of top-notch pet-friendly hotels, and of course: a BEACH that is 100% pet-friendly. friendship. No lanyards needed here! Oregon is more relaxed than California in this respect. The views of Haystack Rock will amaze you, especially at sunset. Take a walk with your dog along Ocean Avenue, eat a bowl of chowder on one of the many outdoor patios, and be sure to stop by the cute pet store on the corner: Puppy Love by the Yes.
Pet Friendly Holidays Ni
***My pick for the best pet-friendly hotels in Cannon Beach: This hotel is a combination between: The Ocean Lodge & Surfsand Resort. Both are upscale beachfront hotels and are pet-friendly. The rooms at Ocean Lodge are larger and benefit from the view ~ but Surfsand is closer to town and Haystack Rock, the rooms are more comfortable and the Wayfarer restaurant is my favorite place in town (and they offer room service)…
Bend is my current home in the US and honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever lived anywhere with more animals. The number of amazing dog parks in Bend alone puts dog parks in California to shame, and every restaurant in town has a dog-friendly patio, including: McMenamin’s St. Francis School (bars, pantsuits, cinema and concert hall), tobacconist and hotel in one Catholic school), Naked Winery, Avid Cider, Crux Brewing, 10 Barrel… the list goes on…&.
Bend has more parks, hotels, and restaurants than any other city on this list! Dylan is pictured on the famous Deschutes River Trail in downtown Bend.
***My pick for the best pet-friendly hotels in Bend: Tetherow Golf Resort. At Tetherow you have a luxurious golf course with amazing mountain views and you are only 5 minutes from downtown Bend and the famous Old Mill. This is the best place for animals to live in the city. Otherwise, head to Sunriver Resort, about 20 minutes south of Bend: one of the best family resorts in the United States.
The Dog Friendly Touring Guide
Carmel Main Beach is the world’s favorite dog beach. On the right is the famous Pebble Beach and on the left is the crescent-shaped beach with cypress trees and all kinds of million-dollar homes. ..from beautiful rustic styles to… classic and modern. There’s a reason why Clint Eastwood lives here: there’s something special about Carmel.
And this city loves dogs: they are welcome everywhere ~ but I especially love the beautiful patio at Forge in the Forest, with its dedicated dog list…
Carmel isn’t the only place in Monterey Bay with a beautiful ocean view: head to Pacific Grove and walk along the beach for a view like this…
***Best dog-friendly hotel in Carmel: The Lodge at Pebble Beach. Yes, it’s expensive, but according to my parents and the helpful concierge: every room here is pet-friendly! You can take a dog of any size with you. If you’re looking for a budget place to stay in Carmel, try the friendly Cypress Inn in Doris Day.
Dog Friendly Us National Parks
I grew up in Orange County, and last week I met up with friends in Huntington Beach at the new Pacific City mall. Coming home for Christmas, I had Dylan with me, which means I had to take him to the mall… and I was amazed at how beautiful the place was, how friendly you are! The elegant shops invited us in, drank coffee with us and we all had lunch on Simmzy’s terrace, overlooking the pier and the sea. I would come back in a heartbeat! There’s another reason to visit Huntington with your dog: it’s the only beach in Orange County where dogs can run free.
***Selection of the best dog-friendly hotels in Huntington Beach: Kimpton Shorebreak Huntington Beach. Kimptons are always stylish and dog-friendly… they even offer dog happy hours! This location is especially romantic, with ocean views complemented by a light blue tint, and you’re one block from the pier, Main Street, and the ocean. Huntington Dog Beach is located a few miles north…
San Diego has not one, but two designated dog beaches, both located in two locations: Del Mar and Coronado. Last year, Dylan and I tried out Del Mar Dog Beach, south of Encinitas. Even though it’s not as big as Carmel Beach, it’s still beautiful. There were happy dogs going in and out of the water, people were relaxed and friendly, and parking was easy with plenty of spaces on the same street as the beach entrance. Coronado Beach has pristine white sand and is just a stone’s throw from the historic, pet-friendly Hotel Del Coronado.
Coronado’s Dog Beach is one of the best places to play on the sand with your pet in Southern California.
Is Catalina Island Dog Friendly? (+ Activities & Hotels)
***Our top dog-friendly hotels in San Diego: San Diego is a big city, so it depends on where you want to be. If you’re in North County, try upscale eatery L’Auberge Del Mar, which accepts two dogs of any size. If you’re in the Gaslamp District, try the modern Hotel Indigo with its beautiful rooftop. And if you want to be close to the legendary beach in Coronado, visit Hotel del Coronado, where three restaurants are pet-friendly! (Only dogs up to 40 pounds at Del…)
This is my top pick for the best dog-friendly places on the West Coast! I’d like to add something: many of the travel blogs I’ve been reading lately seem to be written by artificial intelligence. Or the editors don’t know the truth and haven’t visited the sites they promote. Rest assured: I visited every place on this list last year, so my recommendations are current and relevant to 2020 and beyond!
I’ve been traveling with Dylan every year since 2010 between California and Oregon, so I’ve been to all of these places and I look forward to returning to them every year. From water bowls outside shopping malls to designated areas, Washington’s parks are the perfect place for a great vacation with your dogs. Many areas accept dogs of all breeds and sizes. Leashed dogs are welcome on most trails in state and city parks, and many breweries and restaurants offer pet-friendly shelters. If you’re traveling with a canine companion, you’ll find plenty of places to choose from.
Know before you go: As of August 1, 2024, people entering the United States with dogs must complete the CDC’s online dog adoption form. The dog must also meet new requirements from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including being at least 6 months old and appearing healthy upon arrival. Read the full requirements here.

Seattle, Washington’s largest city, is a dog-crazy city, with an impressive array of parks, beer pubs, and restaurants. Many city green spaces have unregulated areas, including Magnuson Park, Golden Gardens Park and Denny Park. Young people and city dwellers can also admire world-class works of art outside the Olympic Sculpture Park. The 9-hectare park is located on the shores of Elliot Bay and is decorated with large sculptures.
While the number of pet-friendly restaurants is on the rise, neighborhoods north of the Lake Washington Ship Canal are especially popular with Fido’s friends. Popular hangouts include Mean Sandwich and Reuben’s Brews in Ballard and Norm’s Kitchen & Bar in Fremont. To the north, Bongos overlooks a rippling green lagoon and is home to a rare sandy beach with animals, games and delicious Caribbean food.
Of the many hotels in the city that welcome four-legged guests, three Kimpton hotels have long been leaders in family hospitality. Kimpton Hotel Monaco Seattle welcomes dogs of all breeds and sizes with water bowls, pet beds and in-room meals, and the concierge can arrange pet boarding and dog walking.
The famously historic city of Spokane is home to the city’s best pet-friendly spot: Riverfront Park. Created for the Expo ’74 World’s Fair, this 30-acre downtown area features bridges and walkways overlooking Spokane Falls, perfect for playing with your dog. Near Kendall Yards Night Market (held on Wednesdays from mid-May to September)
