On the south coast, between East Sussex on one side and Hampshire on the other, West Sussex is one of London’s most accessible coastal areas and is home to a number of dog-friendly beaches all year round, even in summer. This means that you can enjoy a beach day with your dog anytime you want from London within two hours.
At most of the beaches we visited, you almost feel like you’re abroad, as the blue-green sea stretches against the backdrop of the clear blue sky shining in the sun! The beaches in West Sussex are generally single beaches, but at low tide there are miles of compact sandbanks waiting to be played. Let’s face it: from a dog’s point of view, it doesn’t matter whether he’s in or out of the tide most of the time – he’s just happy to be on a sea adventure with his owners!

The Best Dog Friendly Beaches In North Cornwall
We’ve been busy visiting Sussex’s many beaches (someone’s gotta do that) when we put together this list we took a few things into account… the beach itself, any dog restrictions, how easy it is to get there to come. From London and all that. Dog-friendly facilities nearby. Although the beach has dog-friendly facilities, always make sure you bring water for your dog so he can stay hydrated, and even a cooling vest or bandana if you think he might need one.
Here are some of our favorite dog-friendly beaches in West Sussex and the essential information you need to know to make the most of your dog’s day at the beach.
Top tip: When planning your beach day, don’t forget to check the tides, which you can do on this website. If your puppy is not yet used to the sea, it is best to come at low tide. Whether you visit at low or high tide, on the beach or on the sand, you can be sure that you will feel unbeatable when you are ‘on the beach’… with your dog, of course.
Littlehampton West Beach is one of the few places in West Sussex where you can find sand dunes (the best sand dunes we’ve ever found are at dog-friendly Camber Sands in East Sussex). Bordering the River Arun, the west coast stretches for miles until you reach the climb (more on that below). Littlehampton actually has two beaches: East and West Beach, one on either side of the river. The east coast is reserved for swimmers in the summer, which is reasonable because the west coast also has a beach reserved for dogs. You can reach the beach by walking past the West Beach Cafe or by taking a wooden walk over the sand dunes behind the cafe (our preference).
Visiting Dog Friendly West Wittering Beach With Your Dog
Maybe not as famous as some others, but a great beach to visit with your dog thanks to the wide beach, the sturdy wooden beach perch at Lancing Beach and the large green area behind the beach where dogs can run around. There’s a dog converted into a perch, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating for people and dogs, and a varied menu for lunch or dinner (dinner is available in summer).
Another wide range of dog-friendly beaches with a very popular dog-friendly cafe that we came especially for… the Bluebird Cafe. The cafe has a real beach feel and is colorful and welcoming to people and hunters alike. You’ll also find a row of colorful beach huts just beyond the sand – the West Wittering Beach Huts are great for photos, not in caliber.
It is the fastest beach to reach from London by train. Like all its West Sussex counterparts, it offers miles of pebble beaches and is dog-friendly all year round. Anyway after the beach we are always looking for a dog friendly restaurant and there isn’t one on the beach so we recommend another stop on the train to Lansing Beach, see #2 above.
Climping Beach is the beach to visit if you want to get away from it all. It feels peaceful and secluded, even though the nearest beach along Littlehampton’s West Beach is an hour’s walk away (bear in mind that if you leave your car at Climping, you’ll have to walk back). We pretty much had the beach to ourselves, apart from a few other swimmers and dog walkers, so it’s a great beach to go to if your dog needs some space.
These Are Kent’s Best Dog Friendly Beaches Which Are Perfect For Walks By The Sea
Dogs even have their own ‘dog friendly parking space’ when you arrive, which we loved! This is obviously because the car park and beach on the left upon arrival are dog friendly, whilst the car park and beach on the right are dog friendly. There is plenty of parking and a small cafe in a converted shipping container with ample seating on the lawn outside.
As far as dog-friendly beaches in West Sussex go, West Wittering Beach is the West Sussex equivalent of dog-friendly Camber Sands, albeit the furthest from London and the most difficult to reach by public transport compared to the beaches in this guide. However, in summer, dogs are not allowed between groynes 14a to 18, the part with the beautiful beach houses. There is still plenty of room for dogs to romp all year round on the beaches of the Eastern Cape, within walking distance and just around the corner from the beach huts. However, generally the beach is very busy on a hot summer day, so this may need to be done on a summer weekday or at the end of summer.
