Our garden is decorated with tikis (many from the street fair and a few from our travels) so this palm tree is a hit with us – we’re always looking to add Hawaiian vibes to our garden!
Mission Bay Resort
We bought the third one in the top row – so many fun options to choose from.
We love all local artists at the Carlsbad Street Fair. This hand blown glass jelly fish caught our attention and now we have one to decorate our lighthouse. With Mother’s Day right around the corner, the street fair is the perfect place to pick up a unique, handmade gift for mom while supporting local San Diego businesses.
There’s a lot of walking at the Carlsbad Street Fair, so wear comfortable shoes and bring an appetite. H-O-L-Y Guaca-moly, there are so many good things to eat.
Don’t forget hydration. Recently the street fair was very warm and sunny, but this year we heard that it is raining. We love to fill the juice bar empty. Free green juice? Yes please! They also gave out free custom t-shirts.

Even if you don’t plan to buy anything at the Carlsbad Street Fair, it’s a great opportunity to get out and explore all that Karlovy Vary has to offer. In addition, you will find all kinds of interesting things. Last year, we even saw a pig on a leash. 🙂 The Carlsbad Street Fair is now in its 43rd year
“The Carlsbad Village Faire is a celebration of Southern California culture and our community,” said Ted Owen, president and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce. “Carlsbad was recently ranked #1 on the 2016 Men’s Best Places to Live list. We are honored to host this wonderful community event that features over 100 local businesses and offers show for a day to spend quality time with our loved ones, relax and enjoy live music and make great memories.”
Food, music, art, family, friends and lots of fun – we can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday in San Diego! I hope to see you there!
Have you been to the Carlsbad Street Fair? If so, let us know your favorite booths so we can check them out. If not, we hope to see you there! 🙂
Hotel Review: Kona Kai Resort, San Diego, California

Spring is the perfect time to explore nature and explore San Diego. The weather is beautiful, there are many ways to choose from and best of all, it is usually free. Calavera Lake Carlsbad is one of our favorite San Diego attractions—it’s the largest of Carlsbad’s 13 community-owned, designated, and nature preserves. It’s easy to get to (right off Hwy 78), has plenty of free street parking, and is rich in wildlife and beautiful greenery (especially this year, thanks to all the rain we’ve had!) . And it is friendly. We took our puppies Tiki and Kaia on the trip.
What’s so special about this natural preserve? Here, you can explore the volcano (now, of course). Mount Calavera is actually a 22-million-year-old volcanic deposit—and one of only three active volcanoes in Southern California. We had heard that on one clear day there was something strange in the sea from the top of the road, but we never got there.
There are more than four kilometers of trails in Calavera Lake and six trails to choose from – it’s one of the largest trail networks in Carlsbad and connected to other trails – and little Chihuahuas can handle them now. Our journey ends like this picture – with me carrying both of them. I really don’t know who goes here. 🙂

If you bring your children to Calavera Lake, make sure they are on a leash and watch out for rattlesnakes. It’s common to see them on the road in the spring and summer – in fact there was one on the road the last time we were there (and a few weeks ago we had snakes in ‘back of the house that our dog wanted to follow. check), so watch out for the local wildlife crossing the road.
Speaking of wildlife, Calavera Lake has over 12 species of animals – including everything from snakes to egrets, egrets, ducks and more. We also saw a turtle swimming in the lake. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday if you ask us. This guy decided he wanted to take some pictures…
Calavera Lake also has more than 4 species of trees and 17 grass communities on the site, including coastal Diegan sagebrush, southern mixed chaparrel, freshwater sagebrush, and others. It’s truly amazing what we have in our backyard just a few miles from the highway. There are many things to see in the green mountains while they are there. It almost feels like we’re on vacation, even though this nature reserve is in San Diego’s backyard.
The Lake Calavera Preserve was established as part of Carlsbad’s Habitat Management Program to protect the diverse flora and fauna of San Diego County. Not only is Calavera Lake a great place to hike, but you can also volunteer to clean up trails and special events, or participate in the Adopt-a-Trail program to help build new trails, bridges feet, and others. Kaia is willing to sacrifice herself to get rid of the puppies.

If you are looking for something special, there is also a super Solar System Walk that is good for family-trips with 10 explanations along this 1-mile path representing each tree, the Sun, and Pluto. This project was done by a local Eagle Scout to show the distance between the sun and all the planets in our sky. A good choice for families who want to go out and do something fun and educational.
Calavera Lake is a great choice for a variety of activity levels. Six different routes allow for a fun “choose your own trip” – this is where we like to keep coming back because there’s so much to explore. You can take the “easy” route on the 1.8 mile loop that goes around the lake (our favorite with the dogs), or you can take the “hard” route and hike up the trail to Mount Calavera ( that’s number 513 for those looking for something more exciting) – one day we will reach the top to see the ocean view. 🙂 Lake Calavera has everyone from families to strollers, runners, mountain bikers, working couples and more – there is something for everyone. The area is huge (110 acres) and never seems crowded.
This has become one of our favorite places to explore (aka walk) in San Diego. Here are some tips if you want to look!
The second entrance (off College Blvd./Sky Haven Ln.) has a beautiful “wild bamboo” and bone garden that is worth checking out – we love the diversity of this attraction! Sky Haven Ln. Walking is often the best option if you want to walk in an active way.

We love a cheap date, and Pieology Pizza at Carlsbad Bressi Ranch Village Center has become one of our favorite places for a cheap night out in the city. We save a lot of money, so we try not to break the bank when we go out to dinner. In Pieology, we can have a fun date night under $20 directly at the door – it’s fun and causal (we saw the inspiration quote tree below – you?) with great food and drinks. And it’s also one of our dog’s favorite restaurants
Nice to share about Dog Friendly Vacations 2024 to you.
