We were looking for some of Southern California’s most pristine beaches and were surprised at how limited our options were. There are plenty of natural beaches but we have young children who love to run free in the water so leash beaches are important.
Dog Friendly Campsites On California Beaches
We’ve spent the past few months researching leash-free beaches in Southern California and ranked them from our favorite to our least favorite.
Huntington Dog Beach is our favorite outdoor dog beach in Southern California, and if we lived nearby, we’d come here every weekend. The dog beach is well marked and we had no problem finding parking since we arrived before noon.
Its long, clear and shallow waters made it the perfect spot for our little ones. Zooey takes a bath alone for the first time and is having so much fun running in and out of the water.
A great non-profit group operates this beach and does a great job of providing an “off leash” environment where our kids can run and play freely.

The cliffs are stunningly beautiful and have a variety of beaches for everyone. The exit point starts on the left and is well signposted to point you in the right direction.
We found a hotel overlooking the beautiful Arroyo Burro beach; However, they do not allow dogs. Don’t worry, there are many other dog-friendly options near Santa Barbara.

This was the first off-leash beach we visited and the furthest from LAX. For some reason this dog beach is always listed as a Southern California location; But Carmel is actually part of Northern California and is closer to San Francisco than Los Angeles.
Carmel-by-the-Sea is a dog paradise, rated as the #1 dog-friendly city in America, so we decided to go ahead and add it to our list.
We were staying at a dog-friendly hotel nearby and parking was limited, so we decided to walk to Camel Beach. The view here is beautiful and the powder white sand is good for our feet.
He loves sand, especially sand, and his little hands are happy to touch it. We thought the white sand reminded him of Florida.
San Diego’s Coolest Dog Friendly Places
This was the busiest dog beach we visited. We arrived early around 9am and were shocked to see that the car park was full and lines were forming.
Fortunately, we’ve learned that patience is key because every time someone returns to their car, they assume they’ll abandon it.
The beach is packed with people, from swimmers to beach volleyball players to dog owners, but there’s also ample parking.
We like that the dog area is large and the water is shallow so our kids can frolic in the waves. There are huge piles of rocks here, so if your child likes to jump on rocks, this is a great place.

Zooey loves jumping and rock climbing, so she’s having a lot of fun here. Kuma also had fun climbing rocks, trying to catch Zooey, and chasing other dogs.
We spent the weekend in Long Beach and Rosie’s Dog Beach was just a few miles from the amazing hotel my friend was staying at.
When we first started exploring leash-free beaches in the Los Angeles area, Rosie’s Dog Beach was always at the top of our search results. It is currently the only off-leash legal beach in Los Angeles.
When we arrived around 9:30 Saturday morning, the parking lot was full and my kids had room to run. For some reason, children were not very interested in this beach.
