Last week, my husband Sharath and I traveled with our dogs, Raju and Aishu to Aurika Coorg, an animal welfare park in Coorg, amidst 45 acres of forest and coffee grounds in the Western Ghats. The dogs were also fascinated by what they saw and tasted. Wide open spaces, lots of room to roam and lots of things to sniff, endless treats and toys, delicious food and delicious food. First a little background on how we became new pet parents. A few years ago, when COVID suddenly burst into our lives and the first lockdowns began, my husband and I joined a community of animal lovers to help feed Indie dogs on the streets. And so we found cute puppies lost in the park without their mother. They were gone for several weeks, and we took turns feeding them. One of them is a strong and playful puppy, one of our friends immediately named him Raju because that is his favorite name for all dogs.

Raju grows mean and angry day by day and soon becomes the happy but powerful Alpha of the pack. Unfortunately, a tragedy happened to him, and it seems that in the night when he was only six months old, some thugs beat him and he broke down. Raju, a lively boy, was paralyzed and in severe pain – most doctors told us to keep him. Finally, one of them agreed to the surgery and we brought him home, hoping that one day he will be able to walk and run like normal dogs. However, after two years, although he can stand and walk a little, he is still very lame and has difficulty moving, but he runs in a wheelchair and we found him. And Raju is a traveler who has been to the beach and the forest, and now has a wonderful vacation in the hills. His sister, Aishu, has been with him through all the trouble and has been staying with us for the past few months and this trip is her first trip away from home.

Aurika Coorg leads the way when it comes to animal friendliness. This pet resort in Coorg has more than 95 dogs and cats so far, including 30 Indians. They also have a limited range. However, the Aurika Coorg rarely has them except that they must be forward when outside the rooms and animal houses.
Being a lame dog, Raju also has special needs. Although we have taken him to properties in Ooty and Bangalore and other places near Bangalore where pets are allowed, we were a little worried about whether he would be comfortable here. But Aurika Coorg made him feel at home right from the start. Pets are our guests is their mantra and they wear the friendship of their pets on a necklace, as you can see on the table, at the entrance, said General Manager Sanjay Pandita who welcomed us. While we had the welcome drink, Raju and Aisha got a welcome treat. We even register them as pets at the time of booking with specific details.
The rooms have pet beds, treats and toys and they love it. Everything is designed with the animal’s health and well-being in mind. There are also bowls for serving food and water. While the dog food is set, they can even sit with you in the restaurant at some reserved tables.
The staff treated the animals with such love that Raju and Aishu felt comfortable there. They walked and ran with us, rolled on the grass, bathed, chased away villains and ducks, looked from the balcony into the thicket, curled up and slept dreaming of more adventures.

But there is much more to Aurika Coorg than being a pet friendly resort. Spread over 45 acres, the well-designed property offers you a magnificent view of the Western Ghats forests and coffee and spice plantations. Every part of the property tells a story, whether it’s the artwork on the reception desk or the artistic wood used to carve some of the furniture. You can watch birds, go on nature walks and plant tours, and even try your hand at coffee.
Birds are literally everywhere – in gardens, farms and as art in rooms and hallways. I bird-watched with naturalist Ganesh, who has been “thebirdmanofCoorg” for over two decades and also a great storyteller. Ask him to take you on a tour of the property in addition to a nature walk. I spent two leisurely birding sessions in and around the property and we saw about 30 species in an hour. It was also therapeutic.
There are 55 rooms on the property, three of which are reserved specifically for pets and pet parents. It is now a great holiday destination for families, companies and even weddings. In addition to superb dining and entertainment options, you can choose from the rich restaurant Mirasa, the elegant bar Ariva, the coffee and wine bar called Roast & Red, and even the private cabana room, Aura.
You can even act in the square, Au.rion, or go to the park, Araya for a little spy. The outdoor swimming pool opens up to the mountains and forest, and there are meeting rooms and ballrooms for meetings and events.
