Dog Friendly Lodging Near Glacier National Park – One of the most beautiful parks we’ve been to is Crown of the Continent. The nickname was coined by George Byrd Grinnell when he wrote: “Far in northwestern Montana, hidden from view by jagged peaks, with innumerable angles, is the crown of the continent.” Grinnell thought the glaciers in the mountains were a jewel in the crown, and so do we. This guide will help you decide what to do with kids and dogs visiting Glacier National Park.
Glacier National Park is located in northwestern Montana. A national park since 1910, it is one of the oldest in America and the 5th largest park in the lower 48 after Death Valley, Yellowstone, the Everglades and the Grand Canyon.

The secret of the greatness of Glacier National Park is somewhere – its popularity has increased. In 2020, 1.7 million visitors visited the park due to COVID restrictions. However, in 2021, more than 3 million visitors visited the park. The booking program we are going to talk about helps a lot with this large audience.
Montana — Hike With Your Dog
When you read the guide, you’ll understand why Glacier is considered one of the most beautiful places in the United States, or perhaps the world. Our first visit to Glacier National Park was in late July/August 2021. It quickly became our favorite park that year and we had such a year. In 2022 we visited again for a short trip to North Dakota.
Before visiting Glacier National Park, it is important to know that vehicles entering the Hing Tu San Road and the North Fork area must be reserved. After the season ends (September 11, 2022 this year), they will lift the restrictions for the rest of the season. If you cannot get a pass, you can arrive at the park before 6 am or after 4 pm for the Going-to-the-Sun route and after 6 pm for the North Fork area. In addition to booking a car, you’ll also need a national park pass.
As you read our guide, remember that we live in a Class A 36FT and drive around the park in our Jeep. Some items may not be suitable for travel. There is a limit to the size of the path to the Sun. All vehicles over 21 feet or over 8 feet are prohibited between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun. Also, the elevation must be less than 10 feet if you drive west from Logan Pass to the loop over the rock overhang. The glacier has a shuttle system if you are too big.
You’ll find the best things in Glacier National Park, including 175 mountains, 762 lakes, 563 rivers, 200 waterfalls and 26 glaciers. It should also be noted that the water you will see will be some of the best manga ever created.
Visiting Glacier National Park With Dogs
26 glaciers in the park reached the 0.1 km² criterion in 2015. A glacier is a large mass of ice that flows under its own weight, and this limit is 0.1 km².
You can also see glaciers in Kenai Fjords National Park, Wrangle-St. Elias National Park and Glacier Bay National Park in Alaska. Glaciers in the lower 48 are located in Mount Rainier National Park, Olympic National Park, and Grand Teton National Park. If you’re in Washington, North Cascades National Park has the highest snowpack of the lower 48 states. Another advantage of the North Cascades is that it is less crowded.
If you’re visiting Glacier National Park to see glaciers, look no further. Only a few glaciers are visible from the road, while others are visible on foot. It is easier to see the glacier when the snow melts.
We think the big reward in the park is to see a grizzly bear. We have been lucky enough to see grizzlies on every trip to Glacier National Park and black bears. Good places to see bears are the start of the Sun Road near the river (we saw two in the area), the North Fork area, Two Medicine Valley, St. Mary’s Valley, Lake McDonald, and the Logan Pass area. Glacier has one of the largest grizzly bear populations in the lower 48 states.
West Glacier Vacation Rentals
You can also see a beaver in the river, a pika, a fathead minnow, a moose, a mountain goat, and a bat. You will rarely see mountain lions and lynxes.
Glacial weather can be very extreme. It was hot when we got here in late July and early August. September is very cold. We found a lot of fog on the Going-to-Sun road. While we were on our way, the mountains and the narrow road were shrouded in mist, and nothing could stop us from falling to our deaths. HA HA!
The park is located on the continental divide, where two climates meet. Warm, moist Pacific air comes from the west, and cool, dry air comes from the northeast. Weather occurs at the continental divide — Logan Pass.
We stayed about 20 minutes from Glacier National Park in the boondocking area. We stayed in Flathead Nut Forest for two years (N48.499303° W114.132744°). Boondocking is quiet and ideal for exploring Glacier National Park, Flathead, Whitefish and surrounding areas. Starlink is great and Verizon has coverage too.

However, there are campsites in the area, and with a little planning, you won’t have a hard time finding the perfect spot. You can reserve a campsite or visit one of Glacier National Park’s campgrounds.
In this guide, we’ve listed more kid-friendly trips, places we really enjoyed, and shorter trips where we didn’t have to leave our furry friends for long. However, if what is described here is not too difficult for you, Glacier National Park is over 1 million acres and 745 miles.
Since Glacier National Park only has one dog-friendly trail, we’ve also listed some dog-friendly trails outside the park so you can have fun with them.
Dog Friendly Suggestions
During your visit to Glacier National Park, we recommend visiting the tourist centers. I would like to have a place for everything because I can do the whole collection. HA HA! Glacier National Park has three visitor centers: Apgar (Glacier West Entrance), St. Louis. Mary (East Entrance) and Logan Pass (which sits on the Continental Divide at an elevation of 6,646 feet). The Logan Pass Visitor Center is our favorite, but also very busy.
Part of the road to the sun is closed for the winter on the third Monday in October, but this depends on the weather. The entire road does not open until June or later. In 2022, the road was opened only on July 13 and will be closed on September 30.

It takes about 3 hours to drive the entire route, stopping at a towboat and enjoying the scenery. This tour is something you can enjoy with your furry pets.
Glacier National Park, Mt: All You Must Know Before You Go (2024)
If you plan to travel the Going to the Sun route, we highly recommend a location-based audio navigation app for your smartphone. It is called “The Gypsy Guide”. The app is free and then you pay for the various guides. These are the best and we highly recommend them!! You download the manual you need, so you don’t need park services.
The 6,646-foot pass crosses the Going-to-the-Sun Road across the Continental Divide. Logan Pass is the highest point in the park accessible by car. The main parking lot stays busy all day because of the visitor center and trailhead from here. If you don’t have your own dog (or if you can take turns with one), the visitor center is a must!
West Glacier, Montana is a beautiful town outside of Glacier National Park. You will likely go to West Glacier by entering the park from the west. The other entrance (Camas) on the west side is on a rough dirt road that we would not recommend. You will find many gifts, snacks and guides.
Lake McDonald is 11 miles long and is one of the main attractions of Glacier National Park. The water is like a mirror – on the beach you can see the brightest round stones. You and your dog can visit some parts of the lake if you don’t see the no dogs sign. We learned a wonderful story about the lake from the gypsy guide we mentioned earlier.

To get to Mani Glacier, you need to enter a separate entrance west of the town of Babb. This area is the confluence of four important valleys, two of which are glacial. Many glaciers are beautiful. We also saw grizzlies and black bears in the area.
The Apgar Bike Trail is the only dog-friendly trail in Glacier National Park on the US border. It is 3.5 miles and the return trail is near West Glacier.
