We were late for a weekend at home, so when Hotel Indigo invited us to check out their boutique hotel in York Place, we jumped at the chance.
The hotel is located in the heart of the new town in a row of Georgian houses. Shops, restaurants, bars, attractions, parks and more are all on the hotel’s doorstep. Located within walking distance of Edinburgh mainline train station. The airport tram also stops outside, so the hotel is a good base for exploring Edinburgh.

Hotel Indigo has 60 rooms, ranging from comfortable double rooms to luxurious suites. There is a gym, bar and breakfast room. The hotel does not have a restaurant, but there are plenty of them on the doorstep, so this is not a problem.

For my appetizer, I had a large portion of french fries topped with ground beef, cheese, and jalapenos. They were great. Mr. J had the macaroni and cheese and fries and was also happy with his choice.
After dinner we walked up the Royal Mile towards Holyrood Castle. The palace is the official royal residence of Scotland and the former residence of Mary, Queen of Scots.
From Holyrood, our walk through the Old Town took us to New Calton Cemetery. The haunted Georgian cemetery has a guard tower built to deter body snatchers. Many graves are decorated with skulls and crossbones.

Now it’s time to rest. The baby lay down on the dog bed and Mr. G and I settled into our comfortable king-sized bed to watch TV.
The next morning we woke up, showered and got ready for the next day. The sun was shining and we were looking forward to a day of walking around the city with the boy, but breakfast first.
I wasn’t sure how good breakfast would be at a hotel without a restaurant, but I was pleasantly surprised. A wide range of breakfast items were offered, including many cooked options and a wide range of continental breakfast items.
We both chose the cooked breakfast – I chose the ‘Edinburgh Whole’ (no grains) which was delicious, especially the haggis. Mr. G had his favorite old royal eggs and the dish did not disappoint.

Our first stop was St. James, right on our hotel doorstep. In the summer of 2021, the exhibition has replaced what used to be an eye-catcher in the 1960s. The new gallery has attracted many fine shops and restaurants to the east of Edinburgh.
The gallery is dog-friendly, with dog watering holes throughout and strollers available for rent if your four-legged friend is as eager to shop as you are. There are also a number of dog-friendly shops and restaurants, including the British restaurant John Lewis, which we visited.

Since we’re not fans of shopping, a visit to John Lewis was like a day of retail therapy for us.
The National Portrait Gallery of Scotland is just a few doors away from Hotel Indigo. It’s been one of my favorite places in Edinburgh since my student days, but I haven’t been there in years. Living on my doorstep gave me the perfect opportunity to make a long-awaited visit to the gallery.
The exhibit is not dog friendly, but there is a grassy area next to it, so we took turns while the other sat basking in the autumn sun with the baby.

Just one step away from the hustle and bustle of George Street, we arrive at the green oasis that is Prince Street Gardens. We stopped briefly in the East Garden to listen to one of the wonderful street performers sing Con Te Partiro (Time of Parting) in beautiful Italian before heading to the West Garden for a walk.
West Park brings back fond memories of my childhood with its children’s park, beautiful fountain and colorful cuckoo clock. Our arrival was well timed as the little bird was about to emerge. And the little bird “Cuckoo, Cuckoo” took me back to those scary days of my childhood.

After leaving Princes Street Gardens, we returned to the hustle and bustle of the city, the historic Old Town – my favorite place to visit when I’m home.

Outside St Giles Cathedral, the main street was packed with tourists, so it was a good time to stop for some refreshments. We headed to Cockburn Street and descended the steep (not very scary) steps of Fleshmarket Close.
We were on our way to one of our favorite traditional watering holes in the Old Town – Ginlin Geordie Bar.
Jinglin’ Geordie’s Bar is one of many dog-friendly bars in Edinburgh. It was named after George Herriot, goldsmith to King James VI. Heriot was so rich that his pockets were so full of gold that he trembled as he walked.
We found a table inside and ordered drinks. White wine for me and local beer for Mr. G – aaaaaaand relaxing.
