In Fruita, leash laws are enforced everywhere but in two specific locations: Snooks Bottom and Bark Park, but dogs in these areas must be closely supervised. Additionally, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands allow dogs to be off leash and on verbal command. You can be ticketed if your dog is on leash outside designated areas.

The summer heat can be brutal on dogs, especially if your dog is older or has a thick coat or short muzzle. You should always have water for your dogs and plan based on the day’s weather forecast. Another good practice is to provide shelter in case of extreme weather conditions. Avoid keeping your dog in the car as cars can get hot quickly, especially on sunny days. Temperatures of 90 degrees or higher can be harmful to dogs, causing heatstroke and even death. When running errands, leave your dog at home or have someone in or near the car.
Camilla’s Kaffe allows dogs on their patio and provides shade for you and your four-legged friend. Customers can order in and then be accompanied by their dog as they are not allowed inside the building. Remember to always keep them on a leash so other customers can enjoy their meal. This rule applies to many other places in the city and there are many places to sit outside with your dog.
Sod’s Brothers, Copper Club and Base Camp Provisions are all dog-friendly breweries. Remember to keep your dog on a leash and make sure it is under control at all times in this environment. People may want to pet your pet, so be aware of people around you to protect them and your pet while you enjoy your wine.
Chow Down is a pet store that lets you bring your pet along while you shop. There are often cats roaming the store, so dogs should be on a leash when visiting. Chow Down offers pet food, treats, collars, clothing and even grooming services. It’s a one-stop shop for all your dog’s needs!

Be prepared to pick up their trash so others can enjoy these spaces.

Unfortunately, the state’s most famous national park (Rocky Mountain National Park) does not allow dogs on any of its trails. But three lesser known parks – Great Sand Dunes, Mesa Verde and Black Canyon of the Gunnison are definitely worth a visit with your dog! All three parks are in southern Colorado and can be combined into one big road trip (the Ultimate Dog Friendly Colorado Road Trip is in the works). If you plan to visit multiple parks in the same year, consider getting a National Parks Annual Pass! An annual pass costs $80, but admission to each individual park will cost $25 or $30 each.

Great Sand Tennis is a four-hour drive south of Denver. Although it’s a lot of driving, it’s possible to make a day trip – that’s what Alice and I did! Dogs are allowed on the first set of dunes and on some trails. I was amazed when we got to these big sand dunes, with big 14’s behind them. The weather can definitely make or break your trip to this park. We were there in the first week of April, a sunny, windy and not too hot day and it was just perfect! It is very cold in winter, with snow, but very hot in summer. Some park roads are closed in the winter (and most in the spring), so you won’t be able to access the higher elevation trails. If the wind is strong, sand can get into your dog’s eyes. If it’s too hot, the sand can burn their feet. We saw other dogs with matching slippers and glasses! Colorado weather is unpredictable, but I plan to go in April, May, or October, or to get to sunrise before the heat sets in. Be sure to stop to hike Zapata Falls on your way: you’ll see signs for it between the highway and the park entrance. Bring waterproof shoes or at least one change of socks.
Located in southwestern Colorado, Mesa Verde is full of cliff dwellings that were built and settled by the Pueblo natives in the 1200s. You can reach the view. and mountain habitats. It is very hot in the summer, but it is surrounded by a park.
